When I mention chaos and clutter, most
people start looking around their offices and
either pat themselves on the back or make a note
to clean things up - possibly with a
blowtorch!
What I'm really talking about are all the
things you are tolerating that sap your energy and
muddy your thinking. It's the stuff that
creates "pinball thinking" and restless
nights.
If you want to consistently attain new heights
of clarity and effectiveness, follow this
path:
- On a regular basis, starting with today,
list all the things you are
"putting up with" in your life. These can
include:
- Things that are not the way you would like
them to be
- Where you say 'yes' when you prefer to say
'no'
- Things that are undone or incomplete,
ranging from putting up with a messy garage to
having a less than satisfying relationship with
a colleague/friend/family
member
Don't censor yourself - write everything!
No one will see this list, and it's a relief just
to get it out into the light of day. After
creating this list, use a five-point scale to rate
each item from "Practically Insignificant" (1) to
"A Lot to Tackle" (5).
Next, knock off three items from the list in
the next two weeks. For all items you rated
a 4 or 5, create an action plan to mitigate or
eliminate in a time frame that works for you -
although 'years' is probably too long.
If you want a hand, just drop me a line...
I found this incredibly useful when I started
this kind of rigor with clutter a number of years
ago as a participant in Leadership Mastery - a
program that creates powerful change that I am now
aligned with. Please contact me if you're
curious about the program.
Enjoy yourself!
